President John Dramani Mahama has described the recent crane crash accident which marred religious proceedings in Mecca as a sad tragedy.
The crane is said to have crashed to death about a 107 worshippers at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. The crane, which fell barely a week before the start of the Hajj on September 7th 2015 is said to have been accompanied by a powerful storm which caused the said construction crane to collapse at one of Islam's most revered mosques, the Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque). The storm is documented to have developed about 4 pm local time as gusty winds shifted direction and caused the local temperature to drop from 42 to 25 degrees Celsius.
The President further consoled families of the victims which so far has not involved the involvement of Ghanaians. Below is the tweet by the President on Friday;
Editor at the Saudi Gazette in Jeddah, Khaled Al-Maeena has described the storm as one of the strongest as it uprooted trees and broke windows throughout Mecca, According to him,
Had it happened an hour later it would have been much worse, Had it happened five hours earlier or four hours earlier, I think the death toll would have been more than a thousand. The irony is that all this expansion was being done to see to the welfare of the pilgrims.
