2018 VGMA: Who wins New Artist of the Year?
In 2017, the Ghanaian music industry saw great young talents who took over the industry by storm having their music played across the country.
Dklassgh.com takes you through some amazing artists who stands the chance of going home with the New Artist Category Award at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
King Promise
King Promise after “Double Trouble” which featured Africa’s most awarded rapper, Sarkodie, continued the hard work, with three major hits in 2017, “Oh Yeah,” “Hey S*xy” which featured BET award-winning Dancehall artist, Stonebwoy, and “Selfish” which is currently enjoying massive airplay nationwide.
Kuami Eugene
From the camp of Lynx Entertainment, the record label produced two talented singers, Kuami Eugene and KiDi who had already made a mark in the MTN hitmaker reality show.
Kuami Eugene who placed second in the last two editions of the Hitmaker reality show and later broke through the scene with his hit track “Angela” which many have tipped to contest for the most popular song of the year category in the next edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
KiDi
KiDi after “Odo,” gained much recognition outside the country which landed him a collaboration with Davido from Nigeria, Remixing the “Odo” tune.
Both Kidi and Kuami Eugene performed on some of the major shows in Ghana and crowned it up with their Wave concert which had the likes of Sarkodie and Shatta Wale performing on that night.
Kurl Songx
Kurl Songx is also one artist who had an amazing year in 2017 after reaching his first major single, “Jeniffer Lomottey” which featured Sarkodie.
Patapaa
From nowhere, Swedru based artist, Patapaa Amisty shocked the world with his hit song, “One Corner”. The One Corner Song and its Dance was evidently one of the most popular songs in Ghana in 2017. One Corner shot PatapaaAmisty into the New Artist category. He is a possible winner.
With all these artists impressing in the year under review, it makes the New artist of the year category a bit difficult to select a winner.
Tamale based artist, Fancy Gadam was crowned the New artist of the year in last year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

“There’s More Tracks To Do For People To Cry With, So I Don’t Reply To Diss Songs” – Kofi Kinaata
There has also been this argument that beef and diss songs are healthy for the music industry, but Ghamaiam rapper Npow, a singer, revealed in a recent interview with Andy Dosty that he doesn't give attention to beef and diss songs.
According to Kofi Kinaata, there have been a lot of times his friends and team members have drawn his attention to the jab he has received from fellow musicians, but he has not given that attention.
Kofi Kinaata revealed in the interview that, as he said in one of his old songs, he has a lot of songs to be recorded, which will make people cry and take advice from them, so why should he be recording this song when someone is ready to jam to his songs?

“I Envy Kofi Kinaata A Lot” – Okyeame Kwame (Video)
Ghanaian rapper Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame and nicknamed Rap Doctor, opened up in a recent interview with YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon about how he and rapper and cum singer Martin King Arthur made up a great song together.
According to the veteran rapper who reevaluated in the interview, he envies Kofi Kinaata for his lyrical prowess. He also revealed how Kofi was able to write his chorys with ease and, in the end, even helped him (Okyeame Kwame) write some rap lines.
When asked which elements propel him to come out with nice songs, rapper Okyeame Kwmane revealed that he gets to the studio happily to make songs; not drugs or anything else pushes him to write good songs. However, he revealed that he feels best when the lights in the studio are on and clear to enhance his rapping prowess.
In this same interview, Okyeame Kwame revealed that he is a happy person, he does not hold grudges, and he is compassionate.
